Travel to Bari

Bari

Bari is the capital of the Puglia region in southern Italy. It is located on the Adriatic Sea and has about 320,000 people. It is known for its history, culture, and natural beauty. The city has a rich history dating back to Roman times, and there are many historical and cultural sites to visit. The city is also known for its cuisine, which includes seafood, pasta dishes, and the famous “panzerotto”. Bari is a popular tourist destination and an important economic and transportation center, serving as the main port for cargo and passenger ships.

Bari offers a variety of attractions and activities to enjoy. Here are some highlights:

· Visit the Basilica of San Nicola: This beautiful and historic cathedral is one of the city’s most important religious sites. It houses the remains of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of Bari, and is a popular destination for pilgrims.

· Explore the old town: Bari Vecchia, or old town, is a charming area with narrow streets, colorful houses, and several important landmarks, such as the Castello Normanno-Svevo and the Petruzzelli Theater. It is a great place to walk around and get a feel for the city’s history and culture.

· Try the local cuisine: Bari is known for its delicious seafood and pasta dishes. Some must-try dishes are “pasta alla barese” (a pasta dish with tomatoes, anchovies, and breadcrumbs), “cozze alla barese” (mussels in tomato sauce), and “panzerotto” (a fried pasta filled with cheese and tomato sauce).

· Visit the beaches: Bari has several beautiful beaches along the Adriatic Sea, including the famous Pane e Pomodoro and Santo Spirito. These are great places to relax.

· Take a day trip: The Puglia region is home to many charming towns and villages, such as Alberobello and Polignano a Mare, that are well worth a visit. You can easily reach these destinations by train or car from Bari.

How to get to Bari

There are several ways to get to Bari, including by plane, train, and car:
  • By plane: Bari is served by Bari Karol Wojtyla Airport, located about 5 miles northwest of the city center. There are direct flights to Bari from several major cities in Europe, as well as some cities in North Africa and the Middle East. You can take a bus, train, or taxi from the airport to the city center:
    • Bus: The Airport Bus Service (AMTAB) operates a bus route (line 16) that connects the airport to the city center. The bus stop is outside the arrivals terminal, and the buses run every 30 minutes. The journey to the city center takes about 30 minutes, and the fare is around 2 euros.
    • Train: The airport has a train station that connects it with Bari Centrale station. Trains are operated by Ferrotramviaria SPA: the FR2 (gray) and the FM2 (yellow). To reach the city, both lines are fine. The airport stop is not a terminus. The cost of a train ticket to Bari Centrale is around 5 euros.
    • Taxi: You can also take a taxi from the airport to the city center. Taxis are available outside the arrivals terminal, and the journey to the city center takes about 20 minutes. The fare is typically around 25 euros.
  • By train: Bari is connected to the Italian rail network, so you can take a train from other cities in Italy to get to Bari. The central train station, as mentioned above, is Bari Centrale. You can check schedules and book tickets on the website of the Italian state rail company, Trenitalia.
  • By car: Bari can be reached via the A14 motorway, which connects the city to other parts of Italy. Driving from Rome, you can take the A24 and A25 highways to get to the A14. From the A14, you can take the Bari Nord or Bari Sud exits to reach the city.
Finally, one must head to the University’s main campus to reach the Department of Computer Science from the city center. The campus is located in the San Pasquale district, about 1 mile southwest of the city center.
